Lake Tahoo

Why do we call it Lake Tahoo? Actually the Lake Tahoo or known as Tahoe comes from the native American Washoe tribe. They called the area as "Dao w a ga" place. But the first pioneers mispronounced the name as "Da o w" which become Tahoe or Lake Tahoo in time.

Lake Tahoo or Dao w a ga
Dao w a ga means in Washoe tribe "the edge of the Lake" which is very true. But Tahoo is not the first mispronunciation of Dao w. Tahoe has been called by many names in the history Lake Bigler or Mountain Lake was one of the famous names. But it has become Lake Tahoe name in 1945.

Lake Tahoo and Gold
Lake Tahoo has made its fame in early gold rush days also. But, not because of the gold. Tahoe was a famous place because of timber. Western-bound pioneers discovered soon enough the place to support their timber need. Although the discovery was no good for Tahoo. From 1858 to 1890 pioneers have removed nearly all of the area's forest. Even today the area is still recovering from the massive deforestation.

Lake Tahoo was and will be an important visitor attraction through the years. Our job is to protect the nature, the Lake and it's surroundings. Be sure to visit before its too late..
